The Blue Charm originated more than a century ago as a simple British feather-wing pattern, typically tyed as a small “low-water” fly. Since that time, it has become a widely used and highly effective pattern wherever Atlantic salmon are fished. Numerous variations have appeared, some incorporating elements of the original design, such as an ostrich-herl butt or a Golden Pheasant topping. The traditional mallard, turkey, and teal feather wing is now often replaced with grey squirrel tail. In Newfoundland, tyers commonly substitute moose hair for the wing, and more recently, white calf tail has also gained popularity. Additional adaptations include replacing the original hackle with iridescent blue peacock neck feather or with a lighter shade of blue, such as Silver Doctor blue.
