What is unstable angina? Did you know that over 500,000 cases of unstable angina occur each year in the United States alone? Unstable angina is a serious type of chest pain that occurs when the heart does not receive enough blood flow and oxygen. Unlike stable angina, which typically occurs during physical exertion and resolves with rest, unstable angina can happen suddenly and unpredictably, even while resting. Unstable angina happens when the blood flow to your heart muscle is severely reduced because of narrowed coronary arteries, but not completely blocked as in a heart attack. Think of your coronary arteries as highways delivering oxygen and nutrients to your heart. When these highways become partially blocked by fatty deposits or blood clots, your heart muscle doesn't get enough oxygen, especially when it needs to work harder. This oxygen deprivation causes chest pain or discomfort, which is the hallmark symptom of angina.
