The Crystal Palace Subway is Grade II listed, and was built to provide access to the Crystal Palace for first-class rail passengers from the Crystal Palace High Level Station, which opened in 1865 on the western side of Crystal Palace Parade.
The subway and station was designed by Charles Barry Jr. and it is said that the decorative ornate fan-vaulted ceilings in red and cream brick were built by cathedral craftsmen brought over from Italy in just a few months. The subway fell into disrepair after Crystal Palace burnt down in November 1936 and the High Level Station was demolished in September 1954. Plans to restore it were approved by Bromley Council in 2022, funded by the City of London Strategic Investment Pot, Historic England, and the Friends of Crystal Palace Subway. Access to visit the subway is currently limited to infrequent special public open days.
I took video and photos using a full spectrum converted Sony A6000 camera, and only the ambient lighting present in the subway. My video footage and a selection of still photos is presented here, and a webpage is also available containing all the still photos (including a couple not in the video) and several reference information links (search for "Colin Seymour's Photography Pages")
