I wanted to make a quick video to demonstrate how I use Ableton Live as a practice aid. The beat and pitch manipulation tools in Ableton are fantastic creative utilities but they have applications for us practicing musicians as well. Being able to manipulate tempo at the BPM level gives us a lot more control than the YouTube speed function, and being able to adjust pitch helps a lot with transposed passages or alternate tunings.
I also wanted to demonstrate my strategy for looping passages for focused work- setting loop boundaries larger than our actual focus passage helps us work the transitions in and out of those passages rather than pure isolation. In this instance, I need the “setup” to train my left hand muscle memory so that I start the solo on the right note!
