Beowulf is often taught as a simple story of heroism and monster-slaying.
This reading is convenient, comforting, and mostly wrong.
This video examines Beowulf as an epic about maintenance rather than victory.
Monsters are not symbols of evil to be eradicated forever, but recurring threats to social order. Heroism functions as a temporary solution, not a moral triumph.
Beowulf succeeds because he is exceptional. The poem quietly acknowledges the danger of this model. When the hero ages and dies, the system that depended on him collapses as well. The narrative does not panic, moralize, or attempt to resolve this contradiction. It simply moves on.
Through a close thematic reading, this video explores:
heroism as structural support rather than virtue
reputation as a substitute for permanence
and the poem’s refusal to offer comfort or moral resolution
This is not a motivational epic.
It is a calm acceptance of instability.
