Welcome back to the Hope Wave Show, where we ride the waves of resilience, recovery, and hope. I’m Ralph Cortese from Stroke Warrior Radio, a stroke survivor myself, and I’m here with my dear friend and co-host, Stacy Quinn, a fellow survivor, advocate, and founder of My Stroke of Hope. Today, we dive into an important conversation about post-stroke health, recognizing warning signs, and the ongoing journey of recovery.
Ralph shares his recent experience of battling COVID, highlighting how even after vaccination, we remain vulnerable, especially as we get older. Our discussion emphasizes that stroke isn’t a one-time event; it can happen to anyone, at any age, and often without warning. Stacy explains the key signs to watch for before, during, and after a stroke, including the classic symptoms in the BFAST acronym, but also sheds light on less obvious indicators like severe headaches, black speckles in the vision, and extreme fatigue.
We explore how critical early recognition and response are, emphasizing that time is brain. Despite the importance of rapid action, many of us have waited too long before seeking help, often because we dismiss or misinterpret symptoms. Stacy highlights the need for greater awareness and education—not only among survivors but also within our families and communities—to prevent delays that could cost lives or lead to worse outcomes.
Our conversation turns to the importance of ongoing self-care and vigilance. We discuss how recovery is a daily commitment, and complacency can be dangerous. Stacy shares her insights on maintaining routines, managing stress, and listening to her body’s signals, including how she uses tools like sleep routines and support systems to stay on track. Both of us reflect on the emotional and mental health challenges that often follow a stroke, emphasizing that seeking support and therapy is vital, even years down the line.
We also talk about the power of community and advocacy. Stacy encourages everyone to share stroke awareness messages, use resources like her website and social media platforms, and participate in initiatives like World Stroke Day. Her story of how a simple magazine helped save her husband’s life illustrates the profound impact that awareness and quick action can have.
Finally, Stacy and Ralph discuss the importance of adjusting expectations, celebrating small victories, and embracing imperfection on the recovery journey. They remind us that recovery isn’t over; it’s a continuous process that requires patience, resilience, and support from those around us. Their stories and insights serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration for all survivors and caregivers navigating this challenging but rewarding path.
Join us in spreading awareness, supporting each other, and reminding everyone that recovery is a wave we ride together.
