I know what you’re thinking: What if the defender slow plays the option and sits in the middle? Well I can only give you my opinion, but in that case I (as the quarterback) would still hand the ball to the back. I actually think that’s the best way to defend the option (at least the basic version I talk about in the video). If a defender is forced into a situation like that, they should prioritize keeping containment and forcing the ball inside. As an offense, allowing the defense to force you back inside does play into their hands, but you’d likely have other plays and schemes to throw at the defense beyond one basic option concept.
