Carmilla (2003) by J. Sheridan Le Fanu

This 2003 adaptation of Le Fanu's influential vampire tale was broadcast on a summer's afternoon and probably missed by many at the time. This is rather a shame as its an excellent, atmospheric piece of work with a great cast. The story itself will hold few surprises as its been much-imitated and Bram Stoker himself drew on its influence when writing Dracula. Happily, the play has been repeated multiple times in the years since, including on the winter evenings for which its best-suited.

The cast in this one is pretty stellar, with Kenneth Cranham and Anne-Marie Duff, and Serbian actress Brana Bajic giving the vampire an authentic Balkan accent. David Warner is also in the cast - rather wonderfully when you remember his own past experiences in horror films - and there's a brief appearance by Jacqueline Pearce, herself a former Hammer Horror star...
