In this video, I show you how to paint a beavertail cactus with watercolor paints. Read instructions below.

Painting Steps:

1. Sketch the plant on watercolor paper lightly with a pencil. Another suggestion is to draw first on plain white paper and then transfer that drawing to the watercolor paper. You can do that by shading the back side of the paper with your pencil. Then trace the picture with a ballpoint pen.
2. Add water over the sketch with a big round or flat brush.
3. Mix the green and lightly paint the cactus leaves.
4. Add darker color green in the shaded area and yellow-green where the light hits the plant.
5. If you made a mistake, you could always wipe it with a paper towel. Like I did in the video.
6. Mix a light grayish blue by combining blue with a little bit of green and yellow. Lightly shade the white pot.
7. Using gray (mix blue + red + yellow) add layers to the pot. Keep the white where the light hits the object and add gray for the shadow areas.
8. Add darker blue-green at the bottom of the plant and where the cactus needs depth or shading.
9. Paint the yellow dots all over the cactus. The dots have a particular pattern: a repeated diagonal line.
10. Paint beige color under the dots, to create dimension.
11. Draw the needles and add any other details to the plant.
12. Sign your name and tell yourself: "Good job!"
