In this episode of DO KENDO | ArigaToKendo, we begin a multi-part Shinsa Framework series focused on how kendo is evaluated at the higher levels!
Part I explores seme through debana men—not simply as a timing-based technique, but as an expression of initiative, intent, and connection. In shinsa, striking accurately is important, but more critical is the ability to create the opportunity to strike, rather than reacting after an opening appears.
This episode discusses:
What seme truly means in a shinsa context.
Why seme is about proactively moving, making the opponent think that they are able to get you...rather than reacting. Reacting is too late.
The difference between aiki-based technique and self-directed strikes.
Common mistakes that prevent techniques from being evaluated highly
This series is based on experience passing shinsa across multiple levels and is intended as guidance—not a guarantee. Every shinsa is judged as a whole, and no single concept stands alone.
📌 Next episodes in this framework:
Degote
Kaishido
If you’re preparing for shinsa or refining your understanding of high-level kendo, this series is designed to help you see what the judges are actually evaluating. If you'd like to hear more about a certain topic - leave it in the comments!
