Fun fact: banana ketchup is usually a brownish-yellow color, but it's dyed red to give it a ketchup appearance.
I first encountered banana ketchup in the Philippines when I ate at a local mom and pop restaurant in Abra and ordered a hamburger and french fries (I was still new to the Philippines and not used to the cuisine, so I ate American food everywhere). I thought it was ketchup but I got a surprisingly sweet taste with my first french fry.
Banana ketchup was created during world war II because of a scarcity of tomatoes, but an excess of bananas.
Maria Orosa, a Filipina food scientist, is credited with the invention, but it was Magdalo Francisco, a Filipino businessman, who brought the product to the masses through his now enormous company, Mafran.
Today, Filipinos and the rest of the world enjoy banana ketchup on hamburgers, hot dogs, skewered meats, french fries, and more! :hearts::flag-ph:
