A new route being used to smuggle ganja through courier services has been busted in Odisha’s Bolangir district, with police seizing 113 kg of cannabis and arresting seven persons.

According to police, the accused, all from the Mohangiri area of Kalahandi district, allegedly used an e-commerce company’s courier network to send ganja consignments to Uttar Pradesh and other states.

Police said the accused had registered themselves with the e-commerce company in the name of a saree centre. The ganja was allegedly packed into boxes and handed over at the company’s Bolangir point, with the consignments being shown as household appliances and other goods.

📦 Ganja Sent As Household Goods

The accused allegedly took advantage of the fact that the courier point did not have a scanner. Only the QR code on the consignments was scanned before they were sent out, making it easier for the gang to allegedly move the contraband without raising suspicion.

Bolangir SP Abhilash G said the case was different from the usual ganja smuggling cases detected at check posts and nakas.

“It was a very big challenge for us because we used to catch smugglers at naka check posts, but this is a new mode of operation. They have all the details about the courier and smuggle it through legal channels. No one will know that they are smuggling cannabis as they write household appliances on the consignment,” said Abhilash G.

🚔 Two Cars Seized, Seven Arrested

Police said intelligence inputs helped them track the operation and intercept the accused travelling in two vehicles. A Hyundai Creta and a Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire were seized during the operation.

The ganja was recovered from 10 boxes, weighing a total of 113 kg. Seven persons have been arrested in connection with the case.
