The Soje Residential Environment Improvement District is located near Daejeon Station in Dong-gu, Daejeon, South Korea. This area developed naturally around the railway during the early modern period and became a long-standing residential neighborhood for workers and local families.
Characterized by narrow alleys, small single-story homes, and aging low-rise buildings, Soje-dong reflects the everyday urban landscape of mid-to-late 20th century Korea. Over time, population decline and aging infrastructure led the area to be designated as a residential environment improvement district.
Today, traces of past lives remain throughout the neighborhood—weathered houses, old walls, and quiet streets—while signs of gradual change and redevelopment begin to appear. The area offers a meaningful glimpse into Korea’s urban history near major transportation hubs, making it a compelling location for urban exploration and documentary-style storytelling.
