Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgery that takes out one or more of the four permanent adult teeth in the back corners of your mouth, on top and on the bottom.

If a wisdom tooth doesn't have enough room to grow (called a "impacted wisdom tooth") and causes pain, an infection, or other dental issues, you'll probably need to have it taken out. A dentist or an oral surgeon can take out your wisdom teeth.

Even if impacted teeth aren't causing problems right now, some dentists and oral surgeons recommend taking them out to avoid problems in the future.

Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, are the last set of permanent teeth to come in. Most people get these teeth between ages 17 and 25. Some people never get their third molars. Some people's wisdom teeth come in like their other molars did and don't cause any problems.



Wisdom teeth that don't have enough room to erupt into the mouth or grow normally happen to a lot of people. Wisdom teeth that are stuck in the jaw may only come out partially or not at all.


If a wisdom tooth is impacted, it may:

Angle toward the next tooth as they grow (second molar)

Angle backwards toward the back of the mouth.

Grow at a right angle to the other teeth, as if the wisdom tooth is "lying down" in the jawbone.

Grow straight up or down like other teeth, but they stay stuck in the jawbone.

Problems with wisdom teeth that are crowded

Your impacted wisdom tooth will probably need to be taken out if it causes problems like:


Pain

Food and other things get stuck behind the wisdom tooth.

Infection or disease of the gums (periodontal disease)

Tooth decay in a wisdom tooth that has only partially come out

Getting damage to a nearby tooth or bone

A cyst (a bag filled with fluid) forms around the wisdom tooth.

Problems with straightening other teeth with orthodontic care.
