2025 E04 – Old Fart Visits Český Krumlov | Medieval Gem of Bohemia

Описание: ★NOTES FROM THE TRAIL★
Český Krumlov is one of the most charming small towns in Europe — a medieval jewel wrapped by the Vltava River and crowned by its fairytale castle tower. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Old Town is filled with narrow lanes, riverside cafés, colorful facades, and postcard views around every corner. We recommend one full day with an overnight stay. One of our favorite stops in Eastern Europe.

★LODGING★
Accommodations near the river or close to the castle are especially nice, offering scenic views and a more relaxed atmosphere—particularly in the evening after the day-trippers have left.
Old Fart Recommendation:
We stayed at Hotel Mlýn, located directly on the river with beautiful views. The staff were friendly, breakfast was excellent, and the gentle sound of the water flowing beneath the building made evenings especially peaceful. The hotel is just steps from the bridges and an easy walk to the castle.

★RESTAURANTS★
Český Krumlov has plenty of cozy cafés, traditional Czech restaurants, and bakeries. The town is small and walkable, making it fun to explore and simply stop wherever looks good.

Old Fart Recommendations:
Rather than targeting specific restaurants, we recommend wandering the Old Town and choosing what appeals to you — everything is close, and it’s hard to go wrong. Riverside dining is especially enjoyable in the evening.

★TRANSPORTATION★
Český Krumlov is completely walkable, and once you arrive, you won’t need public transportation. The entire Old Town and castle complex can be reached on foot. Local buses connect the train and bus stations with the outskirts of town, but the historic Old Town is compact and best explored on foot.

Old Fart Recommendations:
For around town, just walk – everything is easy to reach.

We used a taxi from the train station to our hotel, which is the easiest option when traveling with luggage. Bolt is available but limited, and unnecessary around town. Tip: When arriving by train or bus, we recommend calling a taxi about 10 minutes before arrival to ensure a quick pick up at the station.

For longer transfers to or from Prague, Vienna, or Salzburg, private car services like Daytrip and GetTransfer are convenient and comfortable

Vltava River Wooden Raft Ride Sites marked with * are free to visit and do not require reservations. Tickets for the Castle and the Vltava River Wooden Raft Ride can be purchased online. We recommend booking in advance, as popular time slots can sell out.

★DAY TRIP ★
Český Krumlov is most commonly visited as a day trip from Prague or Salzburg. Because it is a compact town with limited nearby excursions, we generally do not recommend planning separate day trips from Český Krumlov itself. A better alternative is to use Český Krumlov as an overnight stop while traveling between Prague and Salzburg. With this approach, popular stops such as Hallstatt and the Mauthausen Concentration Camp can be conveniently visited along the route.

Old Fart Recommendations:
Take the train or bus between Prague and Český Krumlov. Then, consider using a private car service such as Daytrip or GetTransfer between Salzburg and Český Krumlov. We used Daytrip and were very happy with the experience, combining transportation with sightseeing stops at Hallstatt and the Mauthausen Concentration Camp. It made for a full, well-paced, and very enjoyable day.

Český Krumlov feels like stepping into a medieval storybook. Walk the riverside paths, climb the castle tower, cross the Cloak Bridge, and enjoy the peaceful evenings once the day-trippers head home. This is a town you’ll remember long after you leave.
