What is the SLiM-CRAB criteria and what symptoms should patients watch out for in multiple myeloma? For years, doctors used the CRAB criteria to define myeloma:
C: Calcium (high calcium from bone damage)
R: Renal (kidney damage)
A: Anemia (low red blood cell count, fatigue)
B: Bone disease (bone thinning or fractures)
About 10 years ago, three more features were added, forming SLiM-CRAB:
S = 60% plasma cells in bone marrow
Li = Light chains (ratio greater than 100)
M = MRI lesions (more than one focal lesion)
Together, these 7 criteria help doctors diagnose myeloma earlier and guide treatment decisions so patients can get the care they need.
