This video breaks down EASA Airworthiness Directive (AD) 2025-0174, which addresses a critical safety risk of cracks in the tail boom structure of certain Airbus Helicopters EC135 and EC635 models. We cover the required inspections, modifications, and compliance timelines to ensure your aircraft's continued airworthiness and prevent the potential detachment of the fenestron.
AD Number & Issuing Authority: EASA AD 2025-0174, issued by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) on 05 August 2025. This AD supersedes EASA Emergency AD 2013-0289-E.
Affected Models: The AD applies to EC135 and EC635 helicopters, including specific variants and serial numbers (s/n) up to 1276, if they are equipped with a mounting ring frame P/N L535H2120301, P/N L535H2120303, or P/N L535H2120304. The applicability excludes helicopters that already have the frame reinforcement installed.
The Safety Concern: A crack was discovered by a pilot along three rivets on the ring frame that connects the fuselage tail boom structure to the tail rotor "fenestron" housing. If not detected and corrected, this condition could gradually reduce the structural integrity of the tail boom fenestron attachment, potentially leading to the fenestron's detachment and the loss of the helicopter.
Mandatory Actions:
Repetitive Inspections: Within 25 flight hours (FH) since the last inspection or before exceeding 100 FH, and thereafter at intervals not exceeding 25 FH, inspect the ring frame X9227.
Modification: Within 17 months after the AD's effective date, the helicopter must be modified in accordance with the instructions of AH SB EC135-53-030.
Compliance Times:
The repetitive inspections must be done as per the specified FH intervals.
The modification must be completed within 17 months of the AD's effective date the modification constitutes a terminating action for the repetitive inspections.
