🔬 This video presents research on the dissimilar joining of 304L and 347 austenitic stainless steels using Submerged Arc Welding (SAW).
While SAW is highly efficient, its high heat input can cause intergranular corrosion sensitization and excessive grain growth in the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ).
To overcome these issues, the study applied low-intensity electromagnetic interaction (EMI) during welding and compared the results with conventional joints.
🔎 Key findings:
In 347 steel, EMI refined the HAZ grain structure, improving impact absorbed energy and lowering microhardness.
EMI significantly reduced sensitization, boosting intergranular corrosion resistance through grain refinement and better element distribution.
In 304L steel, EMI promoted a more favorable ferrite distribution.
✅ Overall, EMI shows strong potential as an alternative method to extend the service life of welded joints between austenitic stainless steels, enhancing their microstructural, mechanical, and electrochemical properties.
