Описание: While most of Lake Winnipesaukee’s shoreline is privately held, there are several islands managed by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust where the public is welcome to go ashore and explore, picnic, hike, swim, and observe nature. One of these is 11-acre Ragged Island, in the northern part of the lake. Paddlers are welcome to beach their craft along Ragged’s two sandy beaches, while powerboaters and sailors can tie up at one of the docks on the southern tip of the island.

In this short film, we explore the island with Pat Tarpey, Executive Director of the Lake Winnipesaukee Association, a non-profit that monitors the health of the lake and works with the public to enhance and protect the water quality.

As you’ll see, Ragged has an interesting history dating back to when it was apparently held by New Hampshire Governor Benning Wentworth. Over the years, the island had several owners, at one point serving as a hunting camp. In 1936, renowned composer and conductor Wheeler Becket and his wife, Jane, purchased the island as a summer home and studio until 1978, when the Wheelers deeded the property to a youth-education group. The Beckets lived in the cottage that still stands on the southern tip of the island, and which now serves as a venue for natural history presentations and group outings.
