China has once again become Germany’s largest trading partner in 2025, with bilateral trade reaching €251 billion. Yet the relationship is heavily skewed: Germany imported €170.6 billion worth of goods from China while exporting only €81.3 billion, leaving a trade deficit of roughly €90 billion. Merz warned that rising overcapacity and distorted competition are “not healthy.”

The visit showcased deep industrial ties. Merz tested a Mercedes-Benz S-Class in Beijing and later toured Unitree Robotics in Hangzhou, watching humanoid robots perform martial arts and backflips. Around 30 senior German executives joined him, and more than ten commercial agreements were signed.

Still, tensions linger. Chinese state media has urged Germany to “de-Americanize,” even as Merz reaffirmed commitment to transatlantic ties. With exports sustaining China’s economy and German industry deeply embedded in Chinese supply chains, Berlin now walks a delicate line: de-risking without decoupling.
