Smile at the sight of your loved ones. Smile when your friend sends you a subpar joke that makes you roll your eyes, but chuckle nonetheless. Smile as you count your blessings and become conscious of the minute intricacies of life that you have been taking for granted.

At the same time, be mindful of those who are worse off than you are during this disheartening period.

比上不足，比下有余. That is a Chinese idiom that my dad has engrained in me these past few years. While we may be in a bad position and worse off than others, we should be cognizant that many people in the world are experiencing far more excruciating hardships that we cannot even begin to comprehend.

With that preamble over, I’d like to share that there are tens of thousands of people currently in East Indonesia living without electricity and water since COVID started. A significant portion of them have had to go for a day or two without food just because they cannot afford a single bowl of rice.
