In this lecture, we discuss the social structure of the Gupta period, an important topic for UPSC Ancient History, GS Paper 1, and other competitive exams.

The Gupta Empire is often called the Golden Age of Ancient India, but the social reality was complex. This lecture explains the status of women, the condition of untouchables, religious developments, and the role of literature during the Gupta period.

During the Gupta era, society became more patriarchal, and the eldest male member became the head of the family, reducing women's participation in decision-making. Women were largely confined to domestic responsibilities such as household management and childcare.

However, there were exceptions like Prabhavati Gupta, who held political authority and participated in governance, showing that elite women sometimes enjoyed higher status.

The period also witnessed strict caste hierarchy and discrimination against untouchables, who were assigned occupations considered impure such as leather work, waste management, and funeral-related activities. Their interaction with upper castes was heavily restricted.

Literary sources from the court of Chandragupta II, including works of Kalidasa, provide valuable insights into the social life of this period. These scholars were known as the Navaratnas.

Religiously, the Gupta rulers promoted Hinduism, especially the worship of Vishnu and Shiva. At the same time, Buddhism gradually declined in influence, although the rulers generally followed a policy of tolerance.

The lecture also highlights how Hindu festivals were closely linked with agricultural cycles and the Hindu calendar, with celebrations like Onam, Holi, and Makar Sankranti reflecting seasonal and agricultural patterns.
