Ogus 7/5/3 Review:
Ogus 753 is a general strength and bodybuilding ebook/program written by popular youtuber Matt Ogus. Matt Ogus is a very experienced natural bodybuilder having competed in the Muscle Mayhem coming close to winning his pro card. It is safe to say that he has built a great physique using many of the teachings in the ebook. For those of you who do not know who Matt Ogus is and would like to learn more about him and his training here is a link to his channel- / flexforall2
The Book itself- What you're getting is essentially 100 pages of content. Along with the ebook, there are worksheets and spreadsheets that are used for tracking your training as well as calculating your workouts. There are also links to youtube videos demonstrating proper form and technique as well as references to Matt's training which I think is very useful. Overall you can tell Matt worked really hard on creating a great piece of content that is very detailed. From that standpoint alone I suggest you get Ogus 753 if you are interested in reading a well written piece of training information.
The Split- The way the training split is traditionally run is in an Upper Lower split. This is nothing new but you are essentially giving each main lift or movement their own specific day so that you can train it first in the workout while you are fresh. The setup for this can be changed but is normally set up like this: Squat day (lower body), Bench day (upper body), Off, Deadlift day (lower body), and OHP day (upper body). Each main movement is done first in the training session and then is followed by other supplemental and accessory exercises to compliment that days movement and focus.
The Program- As discussed in the video, Ogus 753 is essentially a hybrid of two very popular internet strength programs. These are Wendler 531 and the Russian Squat program the Smolov. Essentially what Ogus did to create the core work for the big 3 and the Overhead press was take the set and rep schemes from the base mesocycle in the Smolov and used them as individual weeks for the Squat, Bench press, Deadlift and Overhead press. Ogus also gives you the option to choose either original or mayhem. The difference between the two is essentially that mayhem substitutes a testing week for a week with additional training volume. Neither one is better than the other I would suggest see which one works best for you. When looking at Ogus 753 you will notice that it is very similar to the structure of Wendler 531 and this is a good thing in my opinion. I think Ogus 753 builds on the downfall of 531 and that downfall in my opinion is lack of training volume. So for starters if you have done 531 and it has stopped working for you or you have plateaued, I would suggest trying Ogus 753 because there is a significant increase in volume per lift. However, I do think the downside of Ogus 753 is the lack of frequency per lift. If you are trying to get really strong at the main movements, I think more frequency is going to be needed for most trainees.
Accessory work- Ogus talks about accessory exercises as if they are just as important as the main exercises, and I like that he does this. Ogus makes a point in saying how it is important to focus on these exercises and do them frequently. At the end of the day, the little things go a long way when practiced over the years and given enough time if you train hard, will produce a great physique that people will admire. The options given for this part of the program I think are great and for anyone can adhere to.
Should you choose this program- It depends. This program is a good one for general strength trainees looking to enhance their physique naturally. However I don't think it's for everyone. If you're a more performance based athlete, I think there are better options out there for you that you can also find for free on the internet. If you are an aspiring bodybuilder or are a bodybuilder that wants to pack on mass in your offseason I think this is a great option especially if you aren't familiar with programming for strength training. For most people who are just starting out, I would recommend with something a bit lower in volume. I would say don't start this program until you have had at least 1 year of training under your belt in the gym.
