The Union Cabinet has approved India's first underwater twin-tube road-cum-rail tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River, connecting Gohpur (on NH-15) to Numaligarh (on NH-715) in Assam. The 33.7-km, 4-lane access-controlled greenfield project, costing ₹18,662 crore, includes a 15.79-km tunnel and will be built using Engineering, Procurement, and Construction mode.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that it will slash the current 240–250 km distance to just 34 km, reducing travel time from about 6 hours to 20 minutes. This landmark initiative will boost Northeast connectivity, freight efficiency, tourism, trade, and regional development.
