‘Breach of Confidence’: Sonam Wangchuk explains what happened when he broke his fast

Ladakhi climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has described the moment he broke his indefinite fast in support of the Cockroach Janta Party protest as a “breach of confidence” by Union government ministers. Wangchuk said the ministers arrived unannounced at around midnight, making it impossible to get opposition leaders, CJP leaders, student leaders and Ladakh representatives present at the time. He said he therefore made it a condition that the news should not break until photographs of these other leaders – whether those already present, or to be added the next day – were also included so that the moment would read as a “national resolution” rather than a win for the government.

He said the ministers agreed, and he even requested a senior Intelligence Bureau officer present there as witness to the pledge. But within minutes of the ministers leaving, he said, the news was already on television with visuals shot from an angle showing only the two ministers and none of the five Ladakh leaders – who were present there – in the frame.

“It was a kind of breach of confidence,” said Wangchuk.
