STORYLINE:
Serbia's Prime Minister, Zoran Djindjic, was assassinated on Wednesday outside a government building.
Djindjic was a key leader of the revolt that toppled former President Slobodan Milosevic in October 2000
Witnesses say two suspects have been arrested.
VOICEOVER:
00.02 Zoran Djindjic was shot outside this government building in Belgrade.
00.07 He was hit in the stomach and back, reportedly by sniper fire from across the street.
00.13 He was taken to a hospital in Belgrade where he died shortly afterwards.
00.18 Witnesses said two people were arrested.
0.22 Serbia's cabinet met in emergency session and declared three days of mourning.
00.27 The Deputy Prime Minister said Djindjic's murder was an attempt to reverse the country's path to democracy.
00.33 SOUNDBITE: (Serbian) Nebojsa Covic, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister
"This criminal act is a clear attempt by those who in the past have tried to stop Serbia's progress and democratisation by assassinations to change the course of history and once again isolate Serbia and turn it into a criminals' kingdom."
00.53 Ordinary Serbs gathered at the scene of the shooting.
00.58 Many were clearly close to tears.
01.02 While others expressed anger.
01.05 SOUNDBITE (Serbian) Vox Pop, woman:
"I'm really shocked and I'm angry because I can't believe the kind of country I live in. What are we doing and where are we heading?"
01.17 UPSOUND of cheering
01.21 Djindjic, then an opposition leader, spearheaded the popular revolt that toppled Slobodan Milosevic in October 2000.
01.28 Later, as Prime Minister, he was instrumental in Milosevic's arrest and extradition to the war crimes tribunal.
01.35 He'd also said he'd try to arrest former Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic, thought to be in Serbia.
01.41 This pro-reformist and Western stance had gained Djindjic many enemies.
01.45 Just last month a truck tried to ram his car in a failed assassination attempt.
01.50 At the time Djindjic dismissed the attack as a futile effort that could not stop democratic reforms.
01.56 But the country may now be facing another period of unrest.
