Clearing homeless camps paused at Sandy River Delta Park after confrontations, Oregon officials say

Описание: After confrontations between a private contractor hired by the state to clear long-standing homeless encampments in the Sandy River Delta forest and people staying at the camps, the state has placed clean up efforts on pause.

"The Oregon Department of State Lands is pausing the cleanup and restoration work at the Sandy River Delta while we reevaluate the best way to move forward," a spokesperson for the Department of State Lands (DSL) said in a written statement. "After assessing recent events at the site, evaluating the safety of the situation, and considering likely outcomes, we determined that it is in the best interest of everyone involved to halt operations for the time being. We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of our staff, contractors, and the public, including those currently in the area."

Multiple people at the camps have told KATU that they have been there for over a decade, some even saying they have lived there for close to 20 years and had only been removed from the camps by the state once or twice during that timeframe.

The state served people at the camps with eviction notices in May, saying they had till June 2 to leave or would be considered trespassing.

On that deadline, the state brought in NW Hazmat, a private contractor paid $150,000 to clean up the camps estimated to be lived in by anywhere between 20 to 30 people at that time.
