Dewitt Clinton Rench spoke often and publicly about his Southern sympathies. The son of a wealthy farmer who enslaved seven persons in Washington County, Md., Rench studied law with his uncle in Baltimore when a pro-secession riot occurred on April 19, 1861. One source notes Rench participated in the attack on the 6th Massachusetts Infantry and killed a soldier, Luther Ladd. Two months later, Rench died at the hands of a pro-Union mob in Williamsport, Md. Here's the story, with a cameo appearance by one of the best-known staff officers in the Army of Northern Virginia.
