West Bengal voter list revision: 6.25 lakh more names identified for deletion

Описание: The hearing phase on claims and objections to the draft voters’ list in West Bengal will conclude at midnight on Sunday, with 6.25 lakh additional names identified as eligible for exclusion from the final electoral roll.

Officials said scrutiny of documents submitted during the hearings will continue until February 21, and the number of recommended deletions may rise further. During the earlier enumeration phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), around 58 lakh names — including deceased, duplicate and shifted voters — were found suitable for exclusion and were not included in the draft roll published in December.

The final number of deletions will be confirmed after publication of the final voters’ list on February 28. The roll was originally scheduled for February 14 but was later extended.

Sources in the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, West Bengal said most of the additional names relate to voters who failed to appear despite repeated notices. These include cases categorised as “unmapped” and “logical discrepancy” during progeny mapping exercises.

A day after publication of the final roll, a full bench of the Election Commission of India is expected to visit the state to review the post-revision situation and may announce polling dates for the upcoming Assembly elections.

West Bengal CEO Manoj Kumar Agarwal has reportedly recommended a single-phase poll, though the final decision will be taken by the Election Commission.
