Hi there, I’m excited you’re joining me today because this video is about one of my favourite themes in art: Portraits. I’m about to show you my created portraits in my art journals and hope to inspire you to create some tiny faces too…

Back to my first portraits...
First I’d love to show you something very old… When I was in highschool I was really into doodling faces. No matter what the teachers told me, I could listen with much more concentration when I was drawing while I listened to them. I never had a plan in mind and I never used reference pictures. I always felt a bit clumsy and incapable of drawing a proper face with correct proportions. Still, I never felt the urge to improve my skills. It was just my way to express myself… and to get through the boring classes of course!
Portraits in art journals
That said, it wasn’t surprising at all, that portraits popped up in my art journals. I work in a very free way, often without a plan. So, it was never my intention to create faces, they just came. I saw a face in the background, or sometimes just an eye. It’s just a natural process to me. Throughout the years, I developed my skills by following painting classes and online courses. I wanted to get the perfect face… Sometimes I use reference pictures, to exercise my skills. Those are inspiring pictures or personality’s.
A portrait art journal
I decided to create a special art journal on portraits, in which I love to work. Still, there are portraits popping up in any art journal I'm workin in.
Like when I created some portrait pages in my 'Scandinavia/France journal'. It was almost like a story they told me. The messages they had came from a deep source. At that moment I realized portraits were taking my art to a deeper level.
Self portraits
In my book 'Home' I created two self portraits, both based on pictures. At the end of the book, the portraits were flowing out of me. Sometimes I completed them with texts.
Challenge 1: Spot the faces
In my weekly art journal lesson in the studio everyone created some intuitive portraits, based on this picture, which shows my table protection with random paint on it. Do you already see some faces?
Challenge 2: Create a mini book of portraits
Creating a portrait each day doesn't have to take long. I work often just for 10 minutes on one face and often want to draw more. You can try out different techniques, just pens or pencils, use a little paint with a few colours, use watercolor or Derwent inktense pencils, etc. etc.
It would be great if you share your portraits or portrait book with me. You can send an email to [email protected].
