Join us as we ride the rails of history, spanning 200 years of UK railway evolution! We travel from the birth of the steam age to the high-speed diesel and electric fleets running today at York Station.
🕰️ A journey through History
Our journey begins with a special opening clip of the Locomotion No. 1 (replica), establishing the 1825 starting point. We then take a unique, reverse-timeline walk through the National Railway Museum (NRM) in York:
The End of Steam: Starting with the Evening Star, the very last steam locomotive built for British Railways in 1960. The Revolution: Working backward through the diesel and electric eras, featuring iconic names like the Intercity 125 (Class 43).The Historical Pioneer: Concluding our museum tour, we arrive at Stephenson's Rocket. It is important to note that the engine displayed here is a detailed replica of the original pioneering locomotive, designed by Robert Stephenson and built for the Rainhill Trials in 1829. Its presence here highlights the revolutionary legacy that began in this very region with the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825.
🚄 Part 2: Mainline Action at York
After the history lesson, we head to York Railway Station to see how the railway continues to evolve! Catch modern diesel and electric services in action. NOTE ON FREIGHT: It is very rare for freight services to run through York Station. We were lucky to catch heavy freight traffic, which we believe was due to alternative lines being closed in preparation for the two-day major Network Rail engineering and improvement works. The fact that the lines were being closed proves that the 'Railways Are Always Evolving!'
