Daniel was a high official in the time of King Darius, respected but envied by his rivals. Unable to find any fault in him, they devised a trap: they convinced the king to sign a decree forbidding prayer to any god except himself. Anyone who disobeyed would be thrown into the lions’ den.
Faithful to God, Daniel continued to pray three times a day. His enemies reported him, and although the king valued him, the law could not be undone. That night, Daniel was cast into the den, where God sent His angel to shut the lions’ mouths. At dawn, Daniel emerged unharmed, protected by divine power.
Briton Riviere painted this scene in 1872, depicting Daniel surrounded by imposing beasts yet unafraid. To achieve the lions’ realism, the artist kept taxidermy specimens in his studio and spent hours studying their posture, musculature, and the intensity of their gaze.
This painting is a reminder that faith, even in the face of the greatest danger, can make the impossible possible.
