One of the many joys of summer in the drier parts of southern Africa is the fruiting of the magnificent Munyii trees (Bird Plum or Berchemia discolor). Their fruits litter the ground beneath the trees, providing a tasty snack for anyone passing by. They are also traded commercially and provide an important supplementary income to many rural people across the region. On his travels through rural Bikita in south-eastern Zimbabwe, Gus (the African Plant Hunter) stopped under a Munyii to enjoy the deep shade and look more closely at this remarkable tree.
