In 1957 a group of local parents got together to build Matata School’s new swimming pool. That’s how it was done in those days – working bees and donated materials.
Matata resident Glen Burt captured the highlights on his cine camera. 40 years later, in 1997, my mother Bronwen Joyce transferred it to VHS, and added sound effects. Now 28 years later it’s done the digital jump and it’s here on YouTube so everyone can enjoy it.
Hopefully some people will recognise themselves, or a family member. If not, it’s still a celebration of the can-do attitude of Matata residents. We want a swimming pool – OK, let’s build it!
