A Fourth District Court Judge determined the audio and transcript from a closed-door hearing for Tyler Robinson in October could be released to the public with limited redactions.
During a virtual hearing on Dec. 29, Judge Tony F. Graf, Jr., said the court had a duty to balance conflicting constitutional rights. He said openness and transparency were foundational to the nation's judicial system, but public access was not absolute.
"The court recognizes the substantial public interests in these proceedings and has approached its review with that interest firmly in mind," said Graf.
Only 246 words of the 80-page transcript were ordered to be redacted. The limited redactions, according to Judge Graf, keep the context surrounding some of the rulings already made while maintaining security, privacy, and Robinson's right to a fair trial.
