Nicola Ferguson Sturgeon was born in Ayrshire Central Hospital in Irvine, Ayrshire on 19 July 1970.

She studied Law at Glasgow University before eventually joining the SNP in 1986.

She once said her motivation for getting into politics was Margaret Thatcher as she "hated everything she stood for".

Nicola Sturgeon was elected to the Scottish Parliament in 1999 and eventually became Deputy Leader of the SNP in 2004.

She is the only female to have ever held both positions of power.

The 2015 General Election is crucial for her party, as they may even find themselves holding the balance of power.

She said: "If there are more SNP MPs and Labour MPs we could together lock the Tories out of government."
