Pingyao Ancient City, located in central Shanxi Province, has over 2,800 years of history and remains one of the best-preserved ancient cities in China. With its city walls, old streets, temples, residences, and banks, it reflects the social and economic life of the Ming and Qing dynasties.

In 1986, Pingyao was named a Famous Historic and Cultural City of China. In 1997, it was listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, along with Shuanglin Monastery and Zhenguo Temple. UNESCO praised it as an outstanding example of a traditional Han Chinese city.

Key Highlights ：
🔸 Xietongqing Ancient Bank (协同庆钱庄)
Founded in 1856, it was one of the earliest forms of modern banking in China. Merchants deposited money in one branch and withdrew it in another with a receipt—like early wire transfers.

🔸 Ma's Courtyard (马家大院)
Built in the Qing Dynasty, this 6,000 m² courtyard belonged to a wealthy family of doctors. It showcases traditional Han residential architecture and local business culture.

🔸 Ancient Government Office (平遥古县衙)
Dating back over 600 years, this complex served as the county’s administrative center. Tourists can view ancient jails, torture tools, and enjoy live reenactments of old trials.

🔸 City Wall (平遥古城墙)
Rebuilt in 1370, the wall stretches over 6 km, with 72 watchtowers and 3000 battlements symbolizing Confucian teachings. It offers great views of the city and surrounding landscapes.
