I'm 92 years old. If you're 60 right now, I've lived an entire second lifetime since I was your age.
32 years. That's the same amount of time between a newborn baby and a 30-year-old man. It's an entire life.
And you're going to tell me it's too late? Too old to start a business? Too old to write the book? Too old to find love?
That's nonsense. You're not old. You're just scared. And lazy.
My name is Frank Morrison. Born in Pennsylvania in 1934. I'm going to tell you the truth about starting over. Because I did it. At 63. And it saved my life.
THE WRONG BUS LIE:
You spent 30 years in career you hated. But you stay because "I put 30 years in. Can't walk away now."
So what? You got on wrong bus and rode it 500 miles in wrong direction. Does it make sense to stay on bus just because you paid for ticket?
No. You get off.
I knew Jerry. Lawyer. Corporate law. Big money. Hated every minute. Miserable. Drank too much. At 55 he quit. Started making furniture. Woodworking in garage.
Wife thought he was crazy. "Jerry, you're throwing away pension!"
Friends laughed. "Jerry the lawyer building bookshelves now."
Jerry didn't care. He spent next 30 years until 85 smelling like sawdust and smiling. He lived more in those 30 years than first 50.
Don't honor a mistake just because you spent long time making it. Cut the line. Let it go.
YOUR EGO IS THE PROBLEM:
Real reason you won't start over isn't money or energy. It's your damn ego.
You're proud. You like being the expert. If you start something new, you're a beginner. A nobody. You might take orders from 25-year-old kid.
That burns your gut, doesn't it?
There's no dignity in pretending to be happy. No dignity in being expert of life you hate.
Kill your pride. Be the fool. Be the beginner. Ask stupid questions.
The most dangerous man in world is old man willing to learn like child. Because he has humility of student but wisdom of master.
Don't let your ego write your obituary.
RETIREMENT IS DEATH TRAP:
In nature, animal doesn't retire. Animal works until it dies.
I've seen so many friends. Good men. Strong men. Hit 65, got gold watch, went to Florida, sat in recliner, turned on news. Within 5 years they were gone.
They didn't die of heart attack. They didn't die of cancer. They died of rot.
When you stop using machine, it rusts. When you stop using brain, it rots.
You need mission. Dragon to fight. I don't care if it's building garden, writing memoir, or starting consulting firm.
You need reason to get out of bed bigger than breakfast.
If you think you'll rest for next 30 years, I promise that rest will turn into funeral real quick.
Choose to burn. Don't choose to rot.
YOU HAVE EFFICIENCY NOT JUST ENERGY:
"Frank, I'm tired. Don't have energy I had at 20."
Good. You were idiot at 20. We all were.
But now you have something better than energy. You have efficiency.
Young man runs fast because doesn't know where he's going. Old man walks slow because knows the shortcut.
You know people. You know how world works. You know how to spot liar. You know how to manage temper. You're dangerous now.
If you apply that wisdom to new goal, you'll lap the young kids.
Stop looking at your age as handicap. It's your leverage.
MY STORY:
I started over at 63. Factory foreman for 38 years. Hated it. Every single day. But I stayed - family, mortgage, responsibilities.
Then my wife died. I realized I'd been using her and kids as excuse. They were grown. House was paid off. I was free.
At 63 I walked out. Started writing. Something I wanted to do since I was kid.
Kids thought I was crazy. "Dad, you're 63. Can't become writer now."
Watch me.
Time's moving. Get to work.
