Huge starfish-like flowers beautifully adorn this succulent plant that also smell like rotting flesh. The Bottle fly is attracted to its smell and hairy surface that mimics the fur of a dead animal and serves as a deceptive but effective pollination strategy. This unique plant is a member of the Milkweed family and is commonly found in its native habitat of Kenya and Zimbabwe. Flower buds emerge on lower half of stem in late summer to early fall and when in bloom, the huge 12" to 18" flowers will last about 2 days. They look like a starfish that has been misplaced on land. The stems each have 4 flanks (4-angled) and have pointed thorn-like sides which are short-lived rudimentary leaves produced by tubercles. Plant is easy to take care of: requires porous soil with adequate drainage and should be watered thoroughly when soil is dry. Full sun or part sun. Protect from frost. Overwatering is the main killer of most plants. Stapelia gigantea common names
Carrion flower
Starfish flower
Zulu giant
Toad plant
When mine was in bloom I never once saw a fly on it. If it had been pollinated small fruits would have followed. As a result, no seeds were produced.
