This 2nd-grade winter art lesson teaches young artists how to use COLOR, VALUE, and TEXTURE to create a snowy forest scene with a bright red cardinal. Students will paint a textured tempera background, splatter white paint to make falling snow, and then cut and assemble a vibrant paper cardinal for the foreground.
By exploring dark and light values, thick brushstrokes, and splatter techniques, students learn how artists create mood and movement in winter artwork.
What Students Will Learn:
Using color and value to create depth in a painted background
Making texture with tempera paint and thick strokes
Splatter painting to create a snowy effect
Cutting and assembling paper shapes to create a cardinal
Understanding how contrast makes the red bird stand out
