बहुत समय पहले की बात है... बुद्धीनगर नाम के राज्य में एक राजा रहता था। जैसा राज्य का नाम वैसे वहां के लोग... यानि बुद्धीनगर में रहने वाले सब लोग बड़े बुद्धिमान थे और किसी भी मुसीबत का हल चुटकियों में निकाल लेते थे। लेकिन बुद्धीनगर का राजा, जिसका नाम तो था वीरसेन...लेकिन था वो बड़ा डरपोक... यानि वो अपने नाम के बिलकुल उलट था... दूसरों की नज़रों में तो वो बड़ा वीर था लेकिन गणित का नाम आते ही उसके हाथ पैर काँपने लगते थे। वो गणित विषय से बहुत डरता था। इतने बड़े राज्य का राजा होने के बाद भी अगर उसके सामने कोई जोड़ने घटाने की बात करता तो वो घबराकर भाग जाता... असल में जब बचपन में वो गुरुकुल में पढ़ता था तब उसके साथ एक अनोखी घटना हुई जिसने उसे गणित के विषय से बहुत दूर कर दिया। एक बार वीरसेन गुरुकुल में सभी साथियों के साथ बैठा कोई सवाल हल कर रहा था कि तभी उसके सिर पे एक कटहल आकर गिर पड़ा। जब तक कोई कुछ समझ पाता वीरसेन अपना सिर पकड़कर वहीँ ज़मीन पर लोट गया। वो तो कहो कटहल छोटा था वरना बेचारे वीरसेन का पता नहीं क्या हुआ होता... ठीक होने के बाद भी वो कई दिनों तक आराम फ़रमाता रहा... लेकिन वो गणित पढ़ने के नाम से ही घबराने लगा... किसी तरह ठोंक पीटकर गुरूजी ने उसे वापस गणित पढ़ने के लिए बैठाया। इस बार जब वो दोबारा गणित पढ़ने बैठा तो किसी शैतान बच्चे ने उसी पेड़ के ऊपर बने मधुमक्खी के छत्ते पर पत्थर मार दिया।
