In boxing, pointing your shoulder at your opponent and standing in a bladed stance with your shoulders not squared up can give you an edge. Your rear hand should be in front of your chin with your elbow tucked in. this stance takes away the jab, the number one punch in boxing. Your’re also further from getting hit with a hook compared to when your shoulders are squared.
One option against a left hook, as I explain here and also shown by terence crawford as he teaches Muhammad Ali’s grandson, is to just turn and block it. Other options include throwing a straight right hand to beat the left hook on the inside of it or pivoting to your left away from the hook. Keeping your rear hand in front of your jaw also allows you rear hand to be closer to your opponent, giving you the ability to beat the left hook on the inside or beat their right hand. When your right hand is tighter and in front of your jaw, you use more of your body when throwing it, when throwing it from the side of your head it becomes more of just an arm punch. Another huge benefit of keeping your right hand in front of your face is that your jab will cross over the pathway of where the right hand is stored and the right hand is hidden until it hits your opponent. When it’s on the side of your head the initial release of the right hand is always seen giving your opponent more time to react and prepare for the punch.
