Tham Hin Refugee Camp 1997-2025.
Let me tell or share information with you about Tham Hin refugee camp. Tham Hin refugee camp, located in Suan Phung District, Ratchaburi Province inThailand. This refugee camp has a poignant story that spans nearly three decades. The camp was established around May 1997, the camp was a refuge for thousands of Myanmar citizens fleeing armed conflict and persecution in Southeast Myanmar, particularly from the Tanintharyi Region. The camp's residents are predominantly Karen Christians, who brought with them a rural, agricultural background.
Early Years and Conditions.
Who living in this camp understand what the camp situation is. From this video you can see that the camp's geography is marked by severely cramped conditions, with homes placed very close together, and thatch roofing being considered a fire hazard. The camp is built on a limited area of 40 rai (6 hectares) and is one of the most 'closed' camps on the border and Thailand capital Bangkok for about 3 to 4 hours driving.
Population and Demographics.
As the report from September 2017, the camp had a verified population of 6,167 residents, with a near-even gender distribution (52% female, 48% male). The population is predominantly young, with 34% between the ages of 5-17 and 12% below 5 years. The majority of residents (99%) are Karen, and 91% identify as Christian.
Living Conditions and Challenges.
Furthermore, Tham Hin camp faces significant challenges, including overcrowding, poor sanitation, and limited access to education and healthcare. The camp is not connected to the mains electricity grid, relying on electric generators for power. And there are not enough food for everyone in the camp. Moreover , the residents are not allowed to use mobile phones or leave the camp freely, which further restricts their access to basic services and information. As of recent reports, the camp holds around 9,500 refugees, more than double its intended capacity, exacerbating sanitary and educational challenges.
Resettlement and Future Prospects.
Despite the challenges, many refugees have found hope through resettlement programs in third countries. Between 2006 and September 2017, over 109,402 refugees from various camps in Thailand, including Tham Hin, were resettled in countries like the United States, Australia, Canada, and several European countries. While some have found new homes, many more continue to hope for a durable peace that would allow them to return to their homes in Myanmar.
Today, Tham Hin refugee camp remains a testament to the resilience of its residents, who have built a community despite the limitations and constrictions. The camp's story is a reminder of the ongoing need for humanitarian support and the importance of finding lasting solutions to displacement and conflict.
May I kindly request everyone and every humanitarian organization to pray and continue support the refugees of Tham Hin Camp and other refugee camps in Thailand until they have a better life or safely can return to their homeland. Thank you for watching my video.
