The game was developed by Tencent, and is free-to-play. You can spend IRL money to get new things faster, but why would you?

In order to play Ranked, you must be Trainer Level 6 (just play the game) and own 5 playable Pokemon (meaning they don't have the clock icon). You have the ability to queue into Ranked with a group of 1, 2, 3, or 5. You cannot queue into a Ranked game with 4. You may only queue into Ranked with someone within 2 Ranks of yourself. This means Beginner cannot queue with Veteran or higher, and Ultra cannot queue with Great or lower, for example.
