Now for the second half of the dihydroxylation reaction; forming syn-1,2-diols.
Previously we saw how taking an alkene to epoxide and then treating it in acidic conditions could result in an anti-addition 1,2-diol.
.
In this case, we are reacting the molecule with Osmium tetroxide (OsO4) which results in the formation of a syn-1,2-diol after formation of a cyclic intermediate and following hydrolysis step.
.
I hope this video serves as a good introduction to the syn-dihydroxylation reaction, comparing it with mCPBA to help with familiarity with a similar concerted mechanism. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask, and more videos about this reaction and alternate methods are coming soon.
.
I hope these chemistry resources and animations help with your continued studies for school, projects, or even just for fun. If you’d like to download high resolution versions of the animations or pages they can all be accessed on my kofi page for free. I hope they help! - Jorge D. Calderin (Doodles in the Membrane)
