On 14 December, 15 innocent people were murdered at Bondi Beach while gathering to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah. Mums and dads. Sons and daughters. Friends, neighbours and loved ones.
This was not random. It was a deliberate act of terrorism targeted at Australia’s Jewish community, and we must be clear about that.
In this speech to Parliament, I speak about the lives stolen, the trauma left behind, and the responsibility we all share to confront antisemitism wherever it appears. I also pay tribute to the police, first responders, healthcare workers, surf lifesavers and everyday Australians who ran toward danger and showed extraordinary courage that night.
No Australian should ever have to ask whether they are safe because of who they are or how they worship. Standing up to hatred is not the responsibility of one community alone. It belongs to all of us.
This is about values. It’s about unity over division, decency over hate, and action over silence.
Today we remember the 15 lives stolen.
We honour those who helped.
We stand with those who are hurting.
And we recommit to confronting hatred together, as Australians.
