Former government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo has criticized Democratic Party (DP) president Norbert Mao over his reported ambition to become Speaker of Parliament.
In recent weeks, Mao—who led the Democratic Party into a controversial cooperation agreement with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) three years ago, despite opposition from several party members—has suggested that he considers himself a suitable candidate to lead Parliament, arguing that he possesses the necessary qualifications and experience, potentially more than the incumbent Speaker, Anita Among.
Opondo dismissed Mao’s aspirations, questioning his leadership credentials and pointing to what he described as Mao’s failure to effectively manage and strengthen the Democratic Party.
Despite the apparent tensions between Mao and Opondo, the disagreement reflects differences within the same broader political alignment rather than a fundamental ideological divide. While Mao is perceived by critics as positioning himself within a camp supportive of a potential future leadership role for Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Opondo has remained a staunch defender of President Yoweri Museveni.
