Rural areas make up the vast majority of the U.S.'s land space, yet many people think of physical activity interventions as city-centric. We will discuss differences in urban/rural data, then learn about an initiative for women farmers and a school principal who turned around student performance and health through physical activity.
“Preparing for PA Interventions in Rural Communities,” by Alan Beck
The presentation will cover background information related to mortality differences in urban vs rural areas (“rural mortality penalty”) and then discuss physical activity differences between urban and rural areas. Finally, the presentation will describe a qualitative study in a rural area in preparation for a multilevel intervention trial.
“Ready to Farm Stronger,” Natalie Roy
Female farmers face unique farm hazards, ergonomic challenges and health disparities across the age continuum. Many of women's farm-related conditions are preventable with access to health professionals trained in the field of agricultural health, web-based health tools, and targeted social marketing messages. Farm women are frequently multi-tasking with family activities and off-farm work. AgriSafe will share an innovative campaign aimed at increasing the strength and flexibility of women working in agriculture.
"From Heart Attack to High Achieving Schools," by Chris Lineberry
