STORYLINE:

Ultra-nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky, whose mantra about his mother being Russian and his father a lawyer helped propel him to prominence in the murky world of Russian politics in the early 1990s, has apparently won yet another heart.

President Vladimir Putin, in an elaborate ceremony in the Kremlin today, conferred the honorary title of Merited Lawyer of the Russian Federation on the enfant terrible of Moscow politics.

Zhirinovsky, whose escapades ranged from fighting with fellow lawmakers to pouring orange juice on a rival politician during a live television talk show, now holds an important post of Deputy Speaker in the State Duma.

Among Zhirinovsky's acquaintances and friends are porn stars and right-wing politicians and dictators from East to West.

For his more than extravagant behavior and inflamatory statements, Zhirinovsky was routinely denied entry visas to a dozen of countries.

It remains to be seen whether the latest award means the Kremlin now looks at Zhirinovsky as a kindred spirit or simply wants to win his support in Parliament for the Putin administration's plans of economic and political change, whatever they may be.
