We can measure resistance in copper wiring. But what is it, really? Why the heck does copper start resisting? Well, the electricity is just electrons moving through the copper. When it's cool, those electrons can slide through smoothly. But as the amount of electrons goes up, the copper atoms begin to vibrate, which is what we feel as heat. This heat causes more vibration, more electron collisions, and soon you have an electron traffic jam -- which is what we call resistance. Of course, you can relieve this traffic jam by having wider lanes. Or in this case, a larger wire gauge. So electricians, be sure to use the right wire gauge for the job, and keep that electron highway moving.
